Since the genome is transmitted to descendants, the alteration is self-perpetuating. Because the genome controls biological activities, its manipulation may significantly alter biological function. WebThe term genetic engineering initially encompassed all of the methods used for modifying organisms through heredity and reproduction. These included selective breeding, or artificial selection, as well as a wide range of biomedical techniques such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and gene manipulation.
