The problem came with there being 40 years of grit, sweat, gun oil. etc. worked into the wood. I also taped off the checkering. I used an aniline dye for color, and 'Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil Stock Finish' for a top coat. Web8. aug 2010 · When refinishing something like a rifle stock one of my last proceedures is to pour boiling water on it. Let dry a few minutes and sand off the "fuzz" that rises. Repeat as neccessary until smooth. Then you are ready for the proceedures. I like IditarodJoes concept, my favorite finish is weather, sweat and grime. Next is the finish....get a can of your favorite Gloss Polyurethane/Varnish finish. Always use GLOSS. It contains more protective solids. Clean my table saw with alcohol, dry it and then apply the paste wax. Let dry and buff off.
